Background Information:
Students participating in this project are from a second grade classroom in Morelia, Michoacan and in Ellensburg, Washington. Students are ages 7-8 and will be focusing on art and literacy instruction. Students will be creating art pieces and writing letters and sharing them using Google Docs. |
Outline:
Letters: Students will be introduced to writing letters. The teacher will write one together with them to show them the proper way. Students will be given a template that they will use for their weekly letters. They will be typed in Spanish on Google Docs and shared to the students in Morelia every Friday. Art: Teacher will show a piece of art and students will share their thoughts and interpretations of it. The teacher will explain that they will be creating art pieces to represent their culture. They will create art to represent their traditions, food, clothing, and something else of their choice. Students will have access to art supplies so they can express their culture in a creative and meaningful way. Their art will be attached as an image to their Google Doc document. They will have the option to attach a video of the art, if they feel the need to. Students will include a brief explanation of the art they created. |
Culminating Joint Project:
Students are expected to create art and write letters to a partner from Morelia. They are expected to share about their culture and learn about a different one from the student in Morelia. They will also be practicing how to read and write in Spanish. The work they have created will be printed and placed into a folder. The folder will be used as they present at the end of the project. They will also be creating a final letter to the class where they can describe what they learned about the culture of their partner. Once everyone has presented, as a class, we will Skype the class from Morelia |
